PlayBuilders of Hawaii Theater Company is very pleased to announce that we have just been awarded a grant of $34,500 by the Victoria S. and Bradley L. Geist Foundation for “Fostering Ohana”, a community-collaborative play for Hawaii’s foster care community! “Fostering Ohana” will be developed in 2016 with foster youth, ages 18 to 26, who have aged out of the system. When finished, it will tour to churches and other organizations on several outer islands as well as here on Oahu in 2017.
Our community partners for this project include the Foster Care Training Committee, headed by Alan Castillo of Partners In Development Foundation. The social workers on this committee represent several important foster care organizations: Catholic Charities of Hawaiʻi, Queen Liliʻuokalani Children’s Center, Epic Foundation, Family Programs, Hawaiʻi and of course Partners In Development Foundation. The Geist Foundation’s mission is to support foster children, their caregivers, and transitioning foster youth. The lead artists for this project are Terri Madden, Becky McGarvey and the PlayBuilders Ensemble.
As part of our agreement with the Geist Foundation, we shall continue fundraising efforts in order to help pay community member actor stipends, airline tickets and other incidentals in year 2. A rehearsed reading of the completed play will be held in November of 2016 for a fundraising “Backers Audition.” You will hear more about this during the coming year.
We extend a sincere “Mahalo," to the Victoria S. and Bradley L. Geist Foundation for their generosity. We are very excited to have this opportunity and look forward to exceeding expectations with “Fostering Ohana."
