The photo was taken Saturday, June 15, at Catholic Charities, Hawai’i during the Network of Ensemble Theaters Microfest USA, Honolulu. The man standing is Daniel Banks from DNAWorks who facilitated the Arts and Homeless track. Seated are members of the 27 year old Los Angles Poverty Department (LAPD) who performed a beautiful piece which explored hope and healing on Skid Row and members of PlayBuilders of Hawai’i Theatre Company who did a reading of Mark Tjark’s “On (and Off) the Streets of Honolulu.”
The Founding Artistic Director of LAPD, John Malepede shared LAPD’s experiences working with the Homeless on Skid Row. PlayBuilders was honored to be asked to discuss our progress in doing community based theatre here in Hawai’i. Seated include John Malpede (Founding Artistic Director of LAPD) and his partner, Henriëtte Brouwers.
“On (And Off) The Streets of Honolulu” will be presented in November, just in time for Homeless Awareness Week.
