Yes, I Am: Stories from Honolulu’s LGBT Community
For our third original production, PlayBuilders developed a new theatrical performance about identity and love based on interviews and stories complied by the Honolulu LGBT community. Just in time for the Gay Pride Parade and the Rainbow Film Festival, this imaginative and artistic piece includes a mixture of dialogue, music, dance and multimedia. The performance is a celebration of the importance of diversity and inclusion and performed during one of the most pivotal months in gay rights history. We invite you to join us in celebration of hardship, love, laughter, identity, and acceptance through the amazing stories from this often marginalized community.

Ronald Gilliam, Co-DirectorRonald Gilliam is currently a doctoral candidate in theatre at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. He developed the so-called theatre bug while growing up in the heart of the Appalachian mountains where, from an early age, he had ample exposure to Appalachian arts from Bluegrass to clogging. His love and appreciation of cultural performances eventually progressed into a passion for producing and directing contemporary dramas. In 2004 he co-founded NoExit Performance, a devising theatre company in Indianapolis. Since then he staged 8 full-length productions and numerous devised performances that were produced nationally and internationally on both local and collegiate stages from New York to Hong Kong. Ronald arrived to the Hawaiian islands in 2007 and immediately fell in love with the local theatre scene. His most recent production, “Borderline” was performed at the Ong King Arts Center as part of the International Brecht Conference cultural program in 2010. He also directed the Hawai’i premiere of Gao Xingjian’s “Nocturnal Wonderer” to sold-out houses at UH-Manoa. In addition to directing, Ronald also acts as the Artistic Director of PlayBuilders.

The stories in the play are so compelling that they resonate with anyone who has struggled for love and acceptance, not only for others but more importantly for ourselves…
